Gronvold Roller. Iris. 2015. Acrylic, Grafix Color Film, Sharpie Paint Markers, Ink, Xerox Transfer on Canvas. 24” x 36”.
“More is more and less is a bore” (Iris Apfel. n.d)
As an artist, at times I feel I should hold back - be more subtle with my mark making and color palette selection. Might then my work be considered elegant, refined?
I can’t. I love contradictions …gobs of information and patterns; I am drawn to unusual compositions. I suffer from, or am comforted by horror vacui? I find pleasure in layering patterns created by overlapping text. The physical reward of mark making releases me from the guilt of holding back. In the piece Iris, I’ve decided “more is more and less is a bore" (Apfel, n.d.).
